Zach Davis, MBA '06

“At larger schools it often feels like you get lost in the crowd but the intimate size of the Eller program offers opportunities to become an important voice not only in the classroom but in the local community and within the larger university as a whole.”

Zach Davis earned his undergraduate degrees in English and American Literature from Harvard University. After earning his Eller MBA with concentrations in finance and marketing, he took a position on the finance and investments team with Bourn Partners, LLC in Tucson.

On choosing Eller:

The quality of education for the tuition price was unparalleled among comparable schools. Also the small class sizes, scholarship opportunities, and quality of life in Tucson created a unique atmosphere that was evident from my first visit.

Takeaways from Eller:

Students can very quickly become a vital part of the Eller community by being involved. At larger schools it often feels like you get lost in the crowd but the intimate size of the Eller program offers opportunities to become an important voice not only in the classroom but in the local community and within the larger university as a whole.

Looking back:

What stands out is the fact that many of the professors will actually learn your name and stop you in the halls to discuss things other than GPA or exam scores. It made learning so much more relevant when you could carry the discussion outside of the classroom and relate it to a wider pool of topics.

On the Eller community:

I was surprised at the broad diversity of backgrounds given such a small sample size of students. I got to know virtually everyone during my time at the program and was exposed to cultural and professional insights that far exceeded my expectations. Furthermore the students were competitive but also very team oriented. If I ever had a question about a specific subject there was a wide variety of students who were eager to help.

What an Eller MBA has done for me:

Coming from a liberal arts background, I needed to gain some fundamental business knowledge — which Eller supplied in spades — but more importantly, I learned how to work in a group environment under pressure situations. After plowing through countless group assignments with students from various cultural and educational backgrounds I feel much better prepared for the team-oriented nature of the real estate industry.

Advice for incoming MBAs:

Remember why you went back to school. A lot of students will spend all of their free time working on assignments or getting ahead in their classes rather than spending time networking and participating in school sponsored clubs and intramural teams. Take advantage of your newfound time to explore new career paths and business ideas that you never had the time to fully consider when you were working full-time.
