Alexanra Meyn, MBA '07

“All of the preparation and studying, group meetings, GMAT, late nights, and focus became pertinent and magically applicable to leverage the direction of my life in a real way.”

On the Eller experience:

My experience in the Eller MBA program has been expansive, challenging, and directed. The Eller MBA program encapsulates a very strong and diverse pool of student backgrounds. This diversity enlivens the classroom dynamic and has provided me support and strength in areas I did not expect from an MBA program.

On Eller faculty and curriculum:

I was most impressed by how manageable every discipline was made. From the technicalities of statistics to the duress of cost accounting, I left each class feeling I'd learned an unprecedented amount. The faculty has been supremely supportive and accessible throughout the curriculum. Professor Daniel Bens added humor to the insanely dry topic of accounting. Lisa Ordornez clarified statistics into a decipherable and useful toolkit. Lance Erickson framed research in such a way that it became fun. Both the Eller MBA staff and faculty have been extremely warm and supportive throughout my time here and I am more than grateful.

On her concentration and electives:

My concentration is primarily on entrepreneurship. The McGuire program is intensely focused and requires tenacity, endurance, and positive team dynamics. Other than entrepreneurship, I have chosen to focus on finance since it is my weakest subject. The elective courses I have chosen within the finance department are undoubtedly challenging, but academia is a non-threatening environment and I am consistently required to give more, dedicate more, and knuckle down purely for my own benefit. My professors and classmates are always there to help clarify topics and push me to learn more.

On her field project:

The field project component of the first year curriculum could not have been better timed, was a much-needed break from the classroom environment, and was specifically and carefully tailored to fit the team's skills and talents. Until the Field Projects, it was not clear how much I had learned throughout the rigor of the first semester. Suddenly, I was placed in a real-world situation and expected to perform. I found myself not only able to perform, but to expand and grow into the experience. It was akin to sprouting wings or losing 25 pounds overnight. All of the preparation and studying, group meetings, GMAT, late nights, and focus became pertinent and magically applicable to leverage the direction of my life in a real way.

On her career:

As an artist, I have an uncompromising creative vein that must necessarily be incorporated into my career. When applying to Eller, I made it clear that my fine art background could be detrimental, but would mostly differentiate me and leverage my skills in a unique way. The Eller MBA and the McGuire entrepreneurship program not only embrace my creativity, but consistently challenge it to stretch beyond any prior set boundaries.
