Experiential Learning Curriculum : Field Projects

Alexandra Meyn.

"The field project was specifically and carefully tailored to fit the team's skills and talents. Until the field project, it was not clear how much I had learned throughout the rigor of the first semester. Suddenly, I was placed in a real world situation and expected to perform. I found myself not only able to do that but to expand and grow into the experience. It was akin to sprouting wings overnight. All the preparation and studying, group meetings, GMAT, late nights, and focus became pertinent and applicable to leverage the direction of my life in a real way."
  — Alexandra Meyn, MBA '07

In the spring semester of your first year, you will apply your academic knowledge to a real-world business challenge in a team consulting project for a company offering a business model or service, or a parallel set of challenges, to that of your identified target employer or industry.

Team Building, Networking

As part of a three- or four-person team, you will work closely with executives from a local, regional, or global company to define the scope, objectives, and deliverables for a 16-week project. Faculty advisors and MBA staff will serve as resources and will check in on a bi-weekly basis throughout the semester.

Hands-On Experience

The Field Project will give you consulting experience in a focus area such as product strategy, financial analysis, strategic planning, or operational excellence. It will also enhance your ability to manage team dynamics — communication, organization, planning, leading, outcome — as well as hone your ability to make sound decisions in a time and resource constrained environment.

Advanced Field Projects

If you want to build on your initial Field Project experience, this 3-credit elective is an opportunity to choose from a series of available projects, then work in a team with graduate students from other disciplines to tackle a complex consulting challenge. Advanced Field projects are designed for students who wish to gain additional industry or skill specific resume-enhancing experience.
