Department of Management and Organizations
Amar Gupta is the Thomas R. Brown Chair in Management and Technology, as well as Professor of Entrepreneurship, Management Information Systems, and Management and Organizations at the Eller College of Management. He is also Professor of Computer Science in the College of Science, and Professor of Latin American Studies in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Prior to joining The University of Arizona in 2004, he was with the MIT Sloan School of Management (1979-2004); for half of this 25-year period, he served as the founding Co-Director of the Productivity from Information Technology (PROFIT) initiative.
Professor Gupta and his students have played a significant role in developing several concepts that are in widespread use today, such as IBM PC based Presentation Graphics and electronic processing of bank checks. He has coined the term "24-Hour Knowledge Factory" to highlight his vision for three or more teams of individuals working in different continents, each during day time in the concerned countries, in order to provide round-the-clock operations. This can lead to shorter development times and costs for many types of products and services. Several students are looking at the concept of 24-Hour Knowledge Factory from diverse perspectives.
He is the author or co-author of over 100 papers and articles in leading professional journals and publications (such as The Wall Street Journal and Scientific American), and has served as advisor to major corporations and government agencies. Professor Gupta has previously served as a diplomat in London and as an international civil servant at the World Health Organization in Geneva.
He usually teaches a course on offshoring of professional services in the fall semester, and a complementary course on international management of services in the spring.
