Eller College Recognized in Recent Rankings

image, U.S. News & World Report's Best Graduate Schools 2005.According to the 2004 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” the Eller MBA is ranked #35, up from #49 the previous year, and 18th among public institutions. For the 15th consecutive year, Eller was recognized as a Top-5 MIS program, this year tied for 4th in the “Information Systems” business specialty. The Karl Eller Center/McGuire Entrepreneurship Program continues its prominence on the national scene, recently being named the #2 program nationally by Entrepreneur magazine. The Entrepreneur ranking is the only of its kind in that it ranks entrepreneurship exclusively and does not consider other school disciplines, areas of focus, or reputation factors.

New Name for Eller College

Following approval by the Arizona Board of Regents this spring, the Eller College of Business and Public Administration has officially been renamed the Eller College of Management. This change gives the College a shorter name with which to brand itself going forward and is broad enough to represent the many diverse areas of management education that the College offers.

With the new name comes a new simple, technology-forward look and feel to create a consistent, relevant brand. Moving forward, we will market the Eller College of Management and the Eller MBA, including these new logos. The new identity will be phased in over the next several months.

Eller Launches Action Learning—Internationally

image, World Resources Institute logo.Assisting a Bolivian organic Andean grain manufacturer, working with an Ecuadorian company in the organic shrimp industry, developing Mexican technologies for market—these are a selection of the exciting international opportunities that Eller MBAs are participating in this summer. Eller is partnering with World Resources Institute’s New Ventures project, a sustainable enterprise program that brings together corporations, entrepreneurs, investors, and business schools to accelerate change in business practices, primarily in Central and South America. The New Ventures project links environmental entrepreneurs with investors, providing our students with experience in three key components of the Eller experience: entrepreneurship, global perspective and social responsibility. Twelve Eller MBAs are currently working on these business projects.

MBA Students/Faculty Recognized for Excellence

Three Class of 2004 MBA students were recently celebrated at convocation ceremonies for their leadership and community service:

  • Todd Egle, outgoing MBA Student Association President, received the Roy H. Johnson Leadership Award for being “a tireless advocate for students of the Eller MBA Program.”
  • Karena Zornow was elected by her classmates as their graduation speaker. As one classmate put it, “Karena is definitely one of the first people you would want to put on your team. She has the ability to get along with almost everyone, is funny, smart, hardworking, and is a great public speaker.”
  • Keith Baron received the Tom Rogers Community Service Award for his dedication not only to international service, through the Peace Corps and summer internship in Kazakhstan, but his commitment to the Tucson Urban League. As Keith says, “I think the measure of a people is how they give of themselves to others; the measure of a man is the same.”

For the second consecutive year, Price Fishback, Professor of Economics, was honored with the MBA Distinguished Faculty Award. This award is chosen by students and according to them, Professor Fishback embodies the tools of a true teacher: patience, understanding and the desire to make learning a contented journey. image, Karena Zornow playing golf in Tucson.

Student Profile: Karena Zornow, MBA 2004

Karena Zornow’s accomplishments are many. Elected by the Class of 2004 as their graduation speaker, Karena exemplifies a successful Eller MBA. She is poised, polished and the consummate professional, not to mention a former Division I basketball player and captain of the University of Vermont’s women’s basketball team, as well as an accomplished amateur golfer. Prior to arriving at Eller, Karena held a variety of positions in consulting, market research, and financial services. She pursued dual concentrations at Eller—Management Information Systems and Marketing—while also serving as a teaching assistant for two undergraduate courses in business communications and new product development. Karena accepted a position with E&J Gallo Winery as a Business Analyst and will be starting later in the summer. Best of luck Karena!

Eller MBA Preview Weekend—A Big Success

The inaugural Preview Weekend event, held in mid-April, showcased part of what gives the Eller MBA its distinctive community feel. Twenty-three prospective class of 2006 students visited Tucson from 10 states and two foreign countries to get a first-hand look at the “Eller Experience.” The collective efforts of 13 faculty, six alumni and numerous staff members led to a conversion rate of 86%—with all but one of the prospective students committed to attend Eller.

Prospective students took part in a day and a half of activities, including panels with alumni, students and faculty, covering everything from what to expect in the classroom to planning career pursuits. The event proved to be a successful professional and social experience for the students, and we plan to bring even more top candidates to Tucson next year to experience the Eller MBA first-hand.
